Two Easy Travel Hacks For Anyone Who Inevitably Forgets Stuff When They Pack!

Do you ever arrive at your destination and discover that you forgot to pack a toothbrush, deodorant, socks or anything else? Has that ever happened to you? It used to happen to me too, ALL the time.

At most places you can buy stuff there. But what if you’re on an African safari? Or at a remote jungle lodge? Then you might not be able to. And all that forgetfulness adds up in cost. Items are anywhere from 1.5 to 3x the cost at hotel gift shops and other convenience stores.

Well, I had one too many trips of forgetting stuff and so I did two things:

  1. I created a “universal” packing list in the notes app on my phone.
  2. Pre-packed items that I know I’ll need on EVERY trip. I just leave inside my Osprey pack.

{What’s A Universal Packing List?}

It’s a list of pretty much everything I’d ever need when I’m traveling. I’ve got gear listed on there from my travels Dominican Republic, Brasil, from my Belize and Costa Rica trips as well as Singapore, Africa and India.

The items I need for each trip varies but at least I’ve got a running list of stuff so I won’t forget anything! I just have to discipline myself to check the list a couple times to make sure I actually packed everything!

And I organized the list into categories:

  • cold weather clothes
  • warm weather clothes
  • hiking gear
  • swimming gear
  • toiletries
  • medications
  • hair/makeup
  • jewelry
  • shoes
  • electronics
  • documents

{Keep It Packed In My Bag}

I used to forget to pack my toothbrush ALL the time. I used to say to myself, “I need it to brush my teeth before we leave and then I’ll pack it.” and I ALWAYS forgot to actually pack it and I’d remember right when I boarded. So I bought another toothbrush and case and just leave it in my pack all the time.

I’ve got:

  • other toiletries
  • ziploc bags
  • accessories for my DSLR
  • my travel towel
  • a few pairs of contact lenses
  • mascara and eyeliner
  • spare pair of eyeglasses
  • extra passport photo

This way I ensure that I’ll never forget them on any trip! I just got back from Belize and I packed a lot faster, having my universal packing list and I would have completely forgotten a toothbrush and toiletries again, if they hadn’t already been packed in my bag.

I know you’re thinking, well if you have your universal packing list, why do you need to pre-pack stuff? Redundancy. I know I’m not always disciplined about checking my list so I built in a fail-safe. You just gotta know yourself ya know?
